“Respond in a timely fashion or you face death and dismemberment" would have done just tine.

Your response to the wedding invitation should he in the mail within a week of your having received the invitation. It should he a written response following the form in which the invitation was issued.

There are some additional points to take note of regarding the invitation. First of all, only the person to whom the invitation is addressed is included in the invitation.

A wedding is not a “date” and no escort is required. Don’t drag someone along who has not been specifically invited. AND DON’T BRING CHILDREN TO A WEDDING OR TO THE RECEPTION UNLESS THEY HAVE RECEIVED AN INVITATION OF THEIR OWN.

If you can’t attend, but someone in your family would like to represent the family, mention this in your response. “I’m so sorry that I will be out of town on that date, but my mother will be here. She remembers your week-end visits from college days so fondly ... ”, or words to that effect should do it.

Similarly an announcement of the wedding — sent after the wedding has taken place — also does not require a gift, but an acknowledgment in the form of a card or note should be sent. And certainly a gift may always be sent, if you choose, in either of these situations.
