In addition to providing coverage against the huge expense of longterm care, Mr. Slaughter believes his legislation could serve as a significant incentive to motivate private insurance companies to develop quality, affordable long-term care policies.

Mr. Slaughter’s bill is similar to legislation (H.R. 5167) he introduced late in the 100th session which had more than 15 co-sponsors. U.S. Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) is expected to reintroduce a similar Senate version of the bill, which last year garnered 31 bipartisan co-sponsors.
