HIGHWAY FOREMAN
(Warrenton Residency-Marshall Area Headquarters) DUTIES: Supervises the daily activities and emergency duties of a work. crew. Instructs employees on work methods, equipment operations, and safety practices. Conducts on-the-job training and safety meetings. Operates equipment and performs manual labor. Maintains records of such things as, work accomplished, materials used, and expenses charged to various accounts. Answers questions from public about such things as, travel directions, work methods, and agency procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS: Knowledge of highway construction and maintenance equipment, materials, and methods; and simple English and arithmetic. Ability to. read and understand written instructions; plan, layout, instruct and supervise the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and manual labor; keep accurate records of costs and progress; meet the public; work within budgets; operate light and medium duty highway equipment. Must be physically able to perform heavy manual labor. Willingness to be sworn in as a peace officer to supervise convict labor. Valid Virginia Operator's license and safety shoes required in the performance of the above duties. Graduation from high school or equivalent and experience related to highway construction and maintenance work, or a combination of experience and training which provides the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities.
