Puller Hughes Jr.
Puller Alexander Hughes Jr., 70, died March 16 of cancer in Fauquier Hospital.
Mr. Hughes was born in Amissville and grew up in Fauquier County.
He was a 1937 graduate of Warrenton High School and a 1941 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.
He was a major in field artillery during World War II. He retired after 31 years as an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil and Conservation Service and as executive director of Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District.
Mr. Hughes was an active member of the Warrenton Hunt; he served on the board of directors of the Warrenton Horse Show and was a starter for numerous local point-topoint races.
An avid fan and ringmaster for area horse shoes, he was also instrumental in organizing the 4-H Horse and Pony Club of Fauquier County.
Survivors include his widow, Virginia Hughes; three daughters, Janet H. Zon of Raleigh, N.C., Evelyn H. Martin of Warrenton and Betty H. Hamilton of Hampstead, Md.; two sons, John Hughes of Unionville, Pa., and Alex Hughes of
Brevard, N.C.; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
