Before slipping old photos into just any old frames, a person should take precautionary measures to preserve the delicate prints.
“First of all make certain that you protect your items from direct light," advises Laura Dutton of the Loudoun Museum. She recommends using ultraviolet plexiglass to cover the photo if possible.
“When you mount your pieces in frames, it’s always best to have some kind of acid-free material on the back of anything so your object is not coming into direct contact with normal papers or especially wood materials." which are highly acidic, she says.
Photographs should be matted so they do not touch the glass, say Otto and Zelman. A spacer puts an air space between the glass and photo for someone who does not want to use a mat.
If a photo touches glass, its chemicals react with the natural salts in the glass, sometimes creating a photographic image on the glass. Dutton says.
The problem with photography is that chemicals have changed over the years, requiring different conservation measures. Dutton says.
