During their discussion, the board members showed they are not universally happy with it. Stonewall-Hawthom representative William Oliver voiced concern about recommending a salary schedule that pays teachers with one, two, or three years of experience the same as beginning teachers. “I have some problems with no raises for four years,” he said.
“I’m afraid we’re getting into a morale problem when teachers see someone coming on board is going to be making the same thing they’re making,” Mr. Oliver said.
Dr. Gangel said the only other way to make salaries competitive “would be to accelerate the whole salary schedule, and that would cost a lot. The cost of front end acceleration is $3,021,” he said. “This could generate a morale problem, but the only way to get there is to do little parts of it at a time rather than the whole thing.”
