Retired Navy Admiral John Marocchi received the enthusiastic endorsement of about two dozen county Republicans last Friday night, who re-elected him to another term as chairman of the county committee.
“I have never seen a more effective and dedicated county chairman than Admiral Marocchi,” said Maurice Herndon, “and we owe him a debt of gratitude.”
The committee’s other two offi" cers, Treasurer Hugh Chrisman and Secretary Sheilah Sweet, were also re-elected to another two-year term.
Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter could not attend the meeting because of the opening of the district high school art exhibition in Winchester, of which he is honorary chairman, but his chief of staff, Rick Holchum, spoke to the meeting on his behalf.
The congressman, Mr. Holchum said, “has always risen to the top. He was an accomplished legislator in Virginia, and now he is the same in D.C.”
He pointed to two recent accomplishments, laws expanding the battlefield park in Fredericksburg and a new highway interchange in Prince William County, as evidence of Mr. Slaughter’s work. “That might not sound like much,” he said, “ but for someone who is not a committee chairman and is a member of the mi-. nority party” it is an accomplishment.
He stressed Mr. Slaughter’s devotion to conservative principles of fiscal responsibility, noting that the congressman was recently honored for the fifth year by the Watchdogs of the Treasury, and has been endorsed for re-election by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Holchum pointed out that Mr. Slaughter has gained a reputation on Capitol Hill as an advocate for the elderly, and was at the front of the recent movement to repeal the Medicare surtax on senior citizens. “He saw the shortfalls of the catastrophic health plan before anyone else.”
