The concerns voiced by district residents, he said, are “precisely contrary to French Slaughter’s record right up to 1990 . . . His record is clear: He is for not spending on these programs. He cuts millions from domestic programs and adds billions to defense programs.”
Mr. Peaslee said he supports a reordering of priorities to stress those domestic needs, including treatment and education to fight drugs, a reduction of Social Security taxes, mandatory assignment of doctors to treat Medicare and Medicaid patients, and a foreign policy which encourages peace.
On the controversial issue of defense, where many conservatives and moderates have urged caution in the face of an apparently receding Soviet threat, Mr. Peaslee said he follows the Nuiin doctrine, espoused by Georgia Democratic Senator Sam Nunn, chairman of the Armed Services Committee and a moderate. “I favor carefully crafted defense expenditures,” he said, rather than the “never seen a defense expenditure he didn’t like” philosophy of Mr. Slaughter.
