The Seventh District Democratic nominating convention will be held at Rappahannock County High School on May 19, followed by the district picnic, which will probably be held at the Child Care and Learning Center, county chairman Doug Baumgardner told a meeting of the county caucus last Thursday night.
There are three announced contenders for the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr. of Culpeper, who is running for his fourth term. All three spoke to the dozen county Democrats who gathered at the courthouse.
Mr. Baumgardner noted that the last time the Democrats ran a candidate for the Seventh District seat was in 1984, when Mr. Slaughter beat Lou Costello in a race for the open seat. “This year we will not give the incumbent Republican congressman a free ride,” he added.
Alexander L. “Sandy” Peaslee, a retired career Foreign Service officer and attorney, told the group he wants the seat because “French Slaughter does not represent the Seventh District.”
He pointed to a poll of district residents conducted just before Christmas, 1989 which found that housing and the homeless, the environment, child care, nuclear energy and education topped the list of important issues of those polled. “The voters of the Seventh District are willing to have more money spent on these programs, and less on defense.
