To the editor:

The U.S. support for Nelson Mandela encourages more terrorism in South Africa.

Mr. Mandela has been trans- - formed from a persecuted political prisoner into a triumphant hero. The truth is that he is an unreformed terrorist whose goal is the same sort of socialist tyranny that has brought increased proverty and despair to most of Africa.

The Bush Administration and our nation’s mass media are concealing the truth about the recently released South African prisoner. When Mr. Mandela was arrested in 1962, after several years of bloody terrorist activity, police found in his possession 210,000 hand grenades, 48,000 land mines, 50 tons of high explosives, and the plans of 107 buildings that were to be blown up. At his trial, he boldly indicated that he planned sabotage. Is this the record of a mere political prisoner?

U.S.-backed pressure on the South African government to release Mr. Mandela has sent a signal of encouragement to other terrorists throughout the world. If Mr. Mandela is now a hero, then crime indeed does pay.
