“Special Delivery: Smoke Free” and “You Can Clear the Air” are two of three stop smoking programs being offered by the RappahanriockRapidan Health District. They are being funded by the Virginia Department of Health’s Health Education Risk Reduction Replication Grant. These two programs are free.
Both programs are essentially self-help programs participants can work on at home. There is a onetime introductory session by the health educator to help participants get the most out of the program, plus a postcard follow-up.
“Special Delivery: Smoke Free,” an American Cancer Society Program, is designed for expectant mothers who smoke.
“The most important reason not to smoke is because you love your baby,” explained Sarah Jane Lee, health educator and coordinator of the program, “Smoking is especially dangerous for the developing baby. Poisonous gases and substances like carbon monoxide and nicotine reduce the amount of vital oxygen and food the developing baby receives.”
