The end product is a new cultivar, “but maybe out of a hundred, you mig get one that isn’t mud,” he says. The process is “really, really involved”, Dinunzio is starting 1,200 seeds this year.
“It takes a lot of different lilies to tr to achieve what you're going after, so I have all these lilies and I need to do something with them,” he says. “So that’s why I have to sell them, because they keep expanding.”
A daylily bloom lasts only one day Dinunzio says. Each day, a new bud opens along each scape, or stalk.
“Each scape has so many buds or it. Of course, the more buds, the more bloom,” he says. The bud count is one of the features that accounts for the difference in daylily prices, which range from $5 to $200.
A person purchasing a daylily receives a division, a root system. The single plant increases every year, “but some of the daylilies will increase five times their normal (quantity) and sometimes only one,” he says, pointinj out that rapidly increasing cultivars are less expensive because more are available.
With the many different cultivars c daylilies now available, the flowers can bloom from mid-April until frost, Dinunzio says. Rebloomers bloom one then send up scapes and rebloom, wlii everbloomers constantly bloom.
“On the finer daylilies, the texture as thick as piecrust, ” Dinunzio says.
Newer lilies are more expensive because fewer are available, he says.
