Another area of the school budget that caused concern was the elimination of textbook subsidies. The current budget contains $10,138 to supplement textbook rental fees. “This really concerns me, especially for families with more than one or two children,” School Board Chairwoman Beverly Massie said. “I realize this is a tough financial climate; this is really going to pinch.”
“Even if that were in there, text. book fees would have to go up,” Dr. Gangel said. “We’re going to be out of money and not able to buy textbooks unless we increase fees.” He said he could not yet estimate how much book fees would have to increase next year, but “it would not exceed double” this year’s figure.
The board members also expressed concern about Rappahannock’s declining enrollment at Piedmont Technical Education Center, although the decrease saves the county money. The county pays tuition to Piedmont based on the county’s proportion of students at the school averaged over the last five years. For the coming year Rappahannock will pay $166,024 for tuition to Piedmont, down by almost $3,000 from the current figure of $168,900.
“I have a concern,” Dr. Gangel said. “I’d like to see more students take advantage of it.”
“It’s a great opportunity for a lot of students,” Hampton District representative Bryant Lee said.
