Have you ever seen a room that is
a design showplace, but it seems
lifeless and dull?
Perhaps the owner has neglected the finishing touches — the small details that distinguish a house and make it a home and a personal statement.
These details are so important, says Tricia Guild, author of “Design and Detail: A Practical Guide to Styling a House” (Simon & Schuster), that they deserve at least as much attention as the overall design scheme.
“People find details boring more than frightening,” she says. “As a result, this element tends to be neglected, skimped and generally glossed over. But if color expresses the whole spirit and life of a scheme, details are its underpinning. ”
The book is filled with lush photographs of Guild’s own house. While her use of blue for a hallway and vibrant jade green in the living room might be too daring for some readers, she will give you an idea of the many finishing details to consider.
