offering annual step increases for teachers with five through 20 years
As a result Rappahannock County teachers’ salaries are greater than Warren County’s for teachers in their third through 16th years. Thereafter a teacher in Warren County will make more, ending up with a top salary of $34,908, $4,379 ahead of Rappahannock’s top salary of $30,529.
Fauquier County’s salary scale is the highest of the six counties included, with a starting salary of $21,000, $966 higher than Rappahannock’s, and a top salary of $36,713, $6,184 higher than Rappahannock’s.
Only Culpeper County’s teacher salary scale is consistently ahead of Rappahannock’s, beginning with an edge of $466 which gradually increases to end with a difference of $3,357 at the top end of the scale.
Rappahannock County has been able to reach parity for teachers’ salaries in the mid range of experience while receiving proportionately less of its funds from outside sources, particularly state aid. Of the five surrounding counties only Fauquier pays a higher proportion of the budget out of local funds and receives a lower percentage from the state.
In the current budget year Rappahannock expects to receive $1,444,000 of its $4,228,000 budget from state aid, or 34.2 percent. Culpeper expects to receive 38.7 percent of its $20,790,000 budget from Richmond. Madison is requesting 42.7 percent of its $7,808,000 budget be funded by the state.
School officials in Page are asking that 51.4 percent of its $12,971,000 budget come from the state’s allocation for education. Warren County is looking for 41.5 percent of its $16,732,000 budget from the state, and Fauquier expects to receive 24.8 percent of its $39,676,000 budget in state aid.
