Spring’s arrival brings a rainbow of
colors to yards throughout
Northern Virginia, as ornamental shrubs and trees sport delicate blossoms in countless vibrant hues.
The list of ornamentals that grow best in this area "could be hundreds of plants long," says Kim Thomas, general manager of Seneca Falls Greenhouses and Nurseries Inc. in Vienna. Azaleas and rhododendrons are among the area’s most popular ornamentals, she says, as are flowering trees such as dogwoods and Bradford pears, according to Kristin Heider, greenhouse manager of Heider’s Nursery in Leesburg. Other decorative plants commonly found locally include forsythias, dwarf evergreens, cherries, hollies and weigelas.
A woody ornamental is described as "a tree that is deciduous and that blooms in the spring and or summertime and is strictly an aesthetic tree, which means no fruit," says Kristin Heider, greenhouse manager of Heider’s Nursery in Leesburg. Forsythias and hydrangeas are examples of this type of plant.
Azaleas are classified as evergreen flowering shrubs, Heider says.
Among the most popular azalea varieties locally are Hershey Red, Delaware Valley White, Gumpo and Gloria, with its salmon pink shade.
