After college, in various towns in Pennsylvania and Tennessee, the columns kept ariving in the mail, carefully dated and folded inside notes from Dad: wonderful vignettes of life on the morning side of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Piedmont Virginia. I remember a story about a February snow, seen through Mr. Kilpatrick’s window, of squirrels scampering across the lawn and birds flitting from the feeder to the bushes mid back.
What a beautiful place Scrabble must be, I thought. Little did I know that soon I would be living five miles down the road in the F.T, Valley.
And you know — Mr. Kilpatrick was right. Every word of those columns is true. Rappahannock County is as beautiful as he says. No one can truly capture the beauty in words, of course, but no one else comes close to Mr. Kilpatrick’s pictures.
