The shiitake (pronounced she-eta-kay) mushroom is the oldest cultivated mushroom known to man.
“Shiitake” translated means mushrooms of the shii tree, a close relative of the oak family. The mushropms were originally gathered from the wild in several of the southeast Asian countries, where they were reserved for noble consumption.
