Latin students
continue wins
Winding up a great year in classical language competition, Wakefield School recognized recent certamen winners in a schoolwide assembly. A strong showing at the St. Stephen’s and UVA competitions was a great way to close the year.
Wakefield’s Latin I teams of Eben Darling, Meredith Fascett, Tim Inglis, and Welby Lynn took first place in the junior high competition at St. Stephen’s certamen. Finishing fourth place for Wakefield in the Latin II contest were Matt Durbin, Ian McGrath and Bobby Nelson.
The University of Virginia hosts the prestigious Virginia Junior Classical League certamen. Placing third in the state at Level I were Eben Darling, Meredith Fascett, Tim Inglis, and Sandeep Ranade. An amazing fifth place at Level II competition was won by two students, Bucky Dusek and Jeremy Thorpe, competing against teams of four, and Thorpe is«only a Latin I student.
David Katzen, president of Wakefield’s Junior Classical League, presented the individual Latin I trophy to Eben Darling. The seventh grader from Rixeyville had accumulated the most points in competition this year.
Nine Wakefield students will attend the national convention and competition of the Junior Classical League this summer at the University of North Texas, Denton.
