Thus Gov. Wilder and Sen. Robb in different ways are sounding the same message that the federal government should adopt Virginia as a model for its fiscal practices and insist that revenues and expenditures at least balance each other out at the end of each fiscal year.
Many Republicans would argue, perhaps justifiably, that the Commonwealth’s spending habits have become considerably more lax in recent years under Democratic control of both the legislative and executive branches. Yet the bottom line is that income meets outlays and elected of' ficials are properly left to decide how the money is spent.
Though it’s unlikely the federal government will adopt Virginia’s fiscal methods, the idea is a sound one though it may take a President Wilder of President Robb to get the plan implemented.
