Casual detection of varroa mites is rare because they are extremely difficult to see, Prof. Fell said. The mite measures only about 1 millimeter by 1.5 millimeters, slightly larger than the period at the end of this sentence.

Beekeepers who’ve purchased queens and packages of bees from staJ^e"known to be infested should -Contact their local apiary inspector so the colonies can be tested, Prof. Fell said. Local apiary inspectors can be reached through VDACS.

“Right now, the infestation is essentially in the northern Virginia counties, but there’s a good chance a number of other areas have the mites if bees have been brought in from states with varroa, such as Florida or Georgia,” he said.

Varroa mites were first discovered in the United States in 1987 in a Wisconsin apiary. They are originally front Southeast Asia, where the species of honeybee used there has developed some resistance to them. The European honeybee, the species commonly used by beekeepers in this country, does not have any resistance to it.
