Mr. Gilkey asked if new fees for some of the Health Department services such as septic inspections could be ready for that meeting. Mr. McCarthy will notify the Health Department that the supervisors want a schedule of those fees in time to include them in the budget.
Mr. Gilkey also suggested that the county consider business license fees. He said that he pays such fees to other counties in connection with his contracting business.
“It would give us a handle on the number of businesses in the county,” Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson suggested.
Mr. Cox and Mr. McCarthy agreed that they could draw up a suggested schedule of such fees but they doubted that much revenue could be raised that way.
Mr. Massie pointed out that the supervisors had been able to keep taxes down because while the tax rate was 75 cents last year, the county only spent at the rate of 65 cents. The spending rate will be up by 12 cents this year. “We haven’t
