The emphasis is on reading and writing for meaning, and the specific skills, such as phonics, spelling and punctuation are taught as they occur during the children’s own experience with reading and writing. Children are expected to learn through trial and error, and non-standard forms, such as invented spellings, are accepted.
This year the kindergarten and first grade teachers have been observing “whole language” classrooms, attending workshops and trying out some parts of the program in their classrooms.
A major part of the reading program is based on the use of “big books” which the teacher places on an easel and reads to the children. These are books that are highly interesting to children, with delightful illustrations and stories involving a lot of repetition and rhyme.
