some who were ready read their stories to the class. The stories featured fairies and Batman, but several were high adventures with their classmates as principal characters.
From time to time during the year, one of the children would say he was ready to put his story into a book. Mrs. Settle typed the stories and pasted them on pages for the children to illustrate. Meanwhile volunteers had made covers for the books, and finally Mrs. Settle bound the books, sewing them together with dental floss.
“They’ve had a good time with it this year,” she said. “They’re really excited about their books. When they’re reading their books and sharing with the class, they beam.” She said each child had “published” at least three books this year.
Mrs. Settle said some days she goes home at the end of the day not certain if she has accomplished anything. It was easier last year, when she had several pages of worksheets the children had done to show what she had accomplished. But when she sees the steady improvement in vocabulary, spelling and punctuation in the children’s writing, she knows she is accomplishing at least as much.
