Four roads that wind through the rolling countryside of Rappahannock County have been designated Virginia Byways by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
The new byways include Fodderstack Road (Routes 628, 606 and 641) between historic Washington and Flint Hill and Route 647 between Flint Hill and Route 637 at the Rappahannock-Fauquier county line.
Naming a road a byway recognizes its historic, scenic or recreational importance, according to VDOT spokesman Frank Edens. “Byways are identified on the Virginia state map published by the Virginia Department of Transportation and motorists are encouraged to use byways for scenic and enjoyable drives away from busier thorpughfares,” he said.
The new byways form a continuous 11-mile route that connects the two Rappahannock County communities with Marshall and Fauquier County. They traverse the Upper Piedmont of northeastern Rappahannock County and have been long recognized for both their scenic qualities as well as their historical importance.
