Literacy group
to reorganize

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, the local literacy group, known as Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA) Rappahannock, will meet in the Courthouse in Washington to enroll members and elect its first Board of Directors.
The group will also hear Dr. David M. Gangel, Superintendent "of Rappahannock* Public Schools, talk on high school dropouts, a subject related to functional illiteracy in the county. Dr. Gangel will speak on the subject of “High School Dropouts in Rappahannock County; What are the Causes of Dropping Out? Why Should We Care? What Can We Do About It?”
Since the success of the group’s programs will depend on the active support and participation of a broad segment of the community, all persons having an interest in the subject of literacy are not only w elcome but encouraged to come and enroll as charter members of LVA Rappahannock. The annual dues will be $5.
Data compiled as of the 1980 decennial census indicate that both poverty, and its frequent attendant, functional illiteracy, were prevalent in Rappahannock County. Indeed, one-fourth of all families in the county then had a family income of less than $10,000, and about one-third of adults over the age of 25 had at that time completed seven years of school or less.
The aim of LVA Rappahannock is to alleviate the lack of formal eduation among some citizens of the county as one means of empowering them to lead more fulfilling lives. To do this, the organization has three programs: helping adult non-readers learn to read and write, teaching English to those who speak other languages, and tutoring candidates for high school equivalency certificates.
At present, LVA Rappahannock has 12 volunteers
