Several years ago, I worked in the same office as a young lady whose last name was Marsh. In our time there, we heard every “wet” joke there ever was and possibly ever will be. Mr. Bird, however, does have one first to his credit: he is the first male bird in history to lay an egg, and it is a biggie.
The budget deficit is due to entitlements, not to the defense budget, which, as I have said before, is probably the federal government’s only legitimate responsibility. In terms of percentage, the defense budget is getting smaller all the time, unlike the Ponzi scheme known as Social Security.
The S & L crisis is a direct result not of deregulation, but of the failure to discard at the same time the (federal) insurance that promised to relieve all S & L executives of responsibility to their actions.
The educational system that Mr. Bird has so low an opinion of was one of the envies of the world before federal money took control of it. I used to be proud of being, from start to finish, a product of the public school system of the state of New York. Not any more.
As to the drug problem and "the poverty and neglect affecting our major cities,” I am convinced that they are directly due to the educational problem. This country is being operated by many people who have little knowledge of and no respect for the history, the geography, and the generosity of spirit that once made it great.
