In years past, fire departments in local communties provided homeowners with chimney cleaning and inspections. However, due to the rapidly changing requirements and other technicalities, including liability questions, volunteer fire departments no longer offer this service.
“Make sure you are getting someone with a good reputation, offering a written inspection,” Mr. Barnes said, adding the average chimney cleaning takes about one hour, with about two-thirds of the time devoted to cleaning and one third of the time devoted to inspections.
