Earth Day 1991 falls on Monday, April 22 this year, and there will be several activities in both “little” and "big” Washingtons on and around that date, reports the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection’s environmental education coordinator, Hunt Harris.
On Saturday, April 20, there will be a community-wide roadside pickup. All residents of the county are encouraged to clean up their roadsides and take their trash to the recycling center at the Amissville landfill.
The Rappahannock High Environmental Club, along with Mr. Harris, will meet at the county park outside “little” Washington at 8:30 a.m. to co-ordinate pick-up on speSee

McCarthy:
Tax increase
isn't needed
County Administrator John McCarthy said Monday the upcoming county budget could be covered without a tax increase.
He said the budget would probably be advertised at the current rate of 77 cents per hundred for real estate and $2.90 for personal property.
Mr. McCarthy said the current tax rate could be kept because, al- - though some budgets such as schools and the library have gone up, there will not be the capital improvement expenses that the county has faced in the past with the jaQ addition and building the Animal Shelter.
Some funds for expanding the landfill can be covered by funds that will not be spent in the current year, he said.
