Council member Newbill Miller said he wants to determine the status of other stub streets as well, and the council voted to hire a title company to research titles on the town’s 10 or 12 stub streets.
Mr. Gooch, who said a stub street runs through his own front yard, said, “I don’t know that we want to treat them all equally” and take “what are basically cul-de-sacs” into the state system.
VDOT may not accept the street next to the Post Office because it may be too narrow, said Mr. Reynolds, although VDOT will make exceptions in special circumstances.
“I think we ought to proceed on that one (the Post Office road), then take a methodical approach to the stub streets,” suggested Mr. Gooch.
Mr. Reynolds said the town should determine the status of the stub streets, and if the council wants to ask VDOT to take them into the state system, that issue would be addressed separately.
