“This is related to the types of things going on in and around the park in that it indicates that a callous disregard for the values of wildlife is still alive and well in Rappahannock County and other counties in the area,” Mr. Clark said.
Mr. Batchelder said, “I’m a great enthusiast for keeping wildlife wild instead of dead. I can’t go out and find the guys muself, and this is the next best thing.”
Last fall Mr. Batchelder pledged $1,000 to a reward fund for information on the poisoning of five bears in Colorado. He was vacationing in his summer home in Breckenridge, Colo., when he read about the poisonings near Meeker. Once he returned to Virginia he contacted the Colorado Division of Wildlife to offer help for that reward fund. The reward in that case has not been collected.
Mr. Batchelder said he hopes his action will encourage others to make pledges to the reward fund “and get the reward higher, and maybe we can get results that way.”
“The eagle is a beautiful animal,” he said. “It’s a shame to see it get exterminated this way.”
