Rappahannock County High School science teacher Brion Patterson was selected as the Chnsta McAuliffe Fellow for Virginia, Lamar Alexander, Secretary of Education announced last month.
The fellowship program, which honors teacher-astronaut Christa McAuliffe, who died in 1986 in the space shuttle Challenger.
Mr. Patterson’s $33,000 fellowship will be used to teach keyboarding and other computer skills to 64 rising sixth through ninth graders during a two-week “Breakthrough Summer” in 1992.
During the 1992-93 school year the program will be extended to fifth graders as part of the regular curriculum, and the following summer it will be part of the Regional Governor’s School.
Mr. Patterson will work with four other teachers and 10 older student tutors to present the program during the first summer. Students will start by learning keyboarding and then progress to computer graphics and creating “multi-media” presentations.
