The supervisors also agreed to fund the request from the Fire and Rescue Association. Originally the association requested $124,895, but they had cut that by $9,000 before the supervisors considered their request. Most of that amount covers insurance for the separate fire and rescue squads. The rest will go for replacement equipment.
The supervisors also agreed to an increase in the amount the county contributes for health insurance for constitutional officers, their staffs, and other county employees.
Mr. McCarthy asked the supervisors to fund the increase so the employees could go from basic insurance to a “cost awareness” plan that includes dental insurance and “well child care.”
It, will mean an increase of $324 per covered employee, or about $10,000, he said.
Mr. Massie asked Mr. McCarthy why he hadn’t asked for the additional coverage in the original budget.
“I had some belief that some of the raises would be cut out of the school budget,” Mr. McCarthy said. “If those are do-able, then these are do-able,” he said, adding that county employees would not be getting raises.
“Some years ago I tried to establish a link between school personnel and county personnel,” Mr. Massie said. “I wasn’t received very favorably. I’m glad to see someone else doing it.”
At an earlier budget work session Mr. Massie questioned the cost of running the animal shelter. The budget for animal control is $36,812. That would be $433 less than the current budget, but this year’s budget includes part of the cost of build
