awareness programs in the schools, a Junior Deputy Program, expansion of Operation Identification in the schools, “improvement of communications between fire and rescue departments and the Sheriffs Office,” “assurance that all personnel receive the latest training” and “assurance that all requests for assistance and citizen inquiries are dealt with in a timely fashion.”
He said he wants “to get involved with the youth of the county,” and that he doesn’t “believe in a deputy sitting at a dumpster for four hours.”
Sheriff Woodward responded that patrol of the landfill is done at the request of the Board of Supervisors.
The Junior Deputy Program, Mr. Cordani said, is a trend that is “starting up all over the country.”
Operation ID, he said, should be continued. Sheriff Woodward responded that his department fingerprinted all children the first year, and now does the kindergarteners at all schools every year.
Mr. Cordani would find better ways to spend the same amount of money, he said. “He (Sheriff Woodward) says he saves the county a lot of money, but looking at the county as a citizen, we could get a lot more.”
He cited complaints from two people that the Sheriffs Office responded two days late to a break-in and not at all to a report of a child sleeping in a man’s barn. Sheriff Woodward said the normal policy is to respond immediately to break-ins, and is not aware of any deviation from the policy.
Mr. Cordani would not be more specific about the complaints of late responses, but a major platform of his campaign is that he would respond in a timely fashion.
He also criticized the Sheriffs Office for running radar when the State Police are already assigned to catch speeders. Sheriff Woodward responded that he received numerous complaints of speeding through the towns when he took over seven years ago, and that in the first four* months of 1991 his deputies wrote tickets that brough the county $8,400 in revenue. All other Sheriffs Office duties come before traffic control, he said.
Mr. Cordani, also running as an independent, has raised $2,000 for the campaign.
