“John (McCarthy, county administrator) told us up front that we should make cuts where we could live with them and that’s what we did,” said Sheriff Woodward.
He said the six full-time employees, counting himself, have a combined 84 years of experience in law enforcement, and said that the staff of the Sheriff’s Office is as qualified and capable as it has ever been.
Among the accomplishments he lists are opening the jail and remodeling the headquarters, establishing the trusty system, and running a clean department.
Last year the jail’s average population was 14.2 prisoners per day. During the first months of 1991 the average had jumped to 16.5, primarily because of expanded bed space. The jail made a $17,000 profit for the county last year.
