I point the finger at no one except
itself. When I do not stop and pkaetip trash off the side of the road, I am silently-giving my approval to those who do. What have I done for the homeless? Not much! Did I express my anger at the treatment of the Kurdish people who were running for their lives? No! Have I attended a school board meeting or a supervisor’s meeting? No!
So when the birds were killed, I did the only thing I knew to do and wrote a letter. My anger at my own smugness and our nation’s recent self-congratulatory stance over the Gulf War makes me so sad. Whether the war was right or wrong is incidental — I long for the day when the back slapping is over and a fully funded school budget or a more fully funded human services budget is cause for back slapping and parades.
