Army and was a member of Marlow Heights Baptist Church. He was the husband of Mabel Smith.
Surviving with his wife are his stepmother, Virginia Hawkins Smith of Front Royal; one son, Sgt. Michael Sean Smith of Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, N.C.; four daughters, Lauren Smith of Falls Church, Sandra Smith and Susan Shaw, both of Charlottesville and Sharon Bass of Front Royal; one sister, Michal Ann Neal of Fredericksburg; three brothers, Gregory Smith of Greensboro, N.C., Wayne Smith of Sterling and Rodger Smith of Front Royal; two stepbrothers, Ed Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga. and Bruce Hawkins of Front Royal; one stepsister, Jeanne Eastham of Huntly; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Robert Bond, Jimmy Fox, Bill Holloway, Michael Seto, John Marlow, Bill Shiflett, Hugh Dickson Henry and Earl Robinson.
Honorary pallbearers were members of VFW Post 860.
