Town treasurer Brad Fisher presented the Washington Town Council with a proposed $113,900 budget last Wednesday, up nearly 10 percent from the current budget.
To finance the budget, Mr. Fisher proposed that the meals and lodging tax be increased from 2.5 percent to 3 percent. He estimated this would bring in from $14,000 to $16,000 in additional revenue.
Council member Newbill Miller said he opposed a tax increase during the recession. He said that even though town residents would not be paying much of the tax, the council should try to cut the budget instead.
