As you may recall, I was
impressed by the thought of the independent Perot running for the office of president and therefore everyone else in Rappahannock County should follow my lead.
However, after seven phone calls and two letters, I have not been able to obtain a petition to sign. I discovered two phony offices in D.C. set up to collect unauthorized contributions and several people who said they were heading up the Virginia and local efforts who promised me they would be in touch. I never heard from any of them again.
So much for thinking politics could change. A bunch of volunteers jump to the fore hoping that it meets with success, then claim the reward without being encumbered by any real work. Although disappointed by the workers, I am still impressed with the idea of a candidate who can successfully get into office without owing a party or a special interest.
Some folks sneer and say that Perot is buying the office. I say better that than have someone else buy the candidate and put him in office as a puppet. It is also said that a man with no public office experience cannot succeed. I say bull. I say that a person who spends his life with his head in the public trough is good at running for office and nothing else.
I read a book once, actually I have read several books, the one I have in mind was titled “The Rich and the Super Rich.” There was a statement therein that claimed that there are five families in the United States that can get a president of their choice elected any time they so decide. Fortunately they spend their effort hanging on to the money they have or trying to get more.
The real enemy of representative government is the press, which can determine public opinion. The press does this by ignoring facts and exaggerating facts. Sen.
