School TV
is no bargain
To the Editor
The high school’s proposed bargain with Channel 1 reported in last week’s News was shocking.
As described in the article, Rappahannock students are to be compelled to be in their classrooms 10 minutes early, to see and hear eight minutes of sound bite hews and two minutes of ads, in exchange for which the promoter will lend the necessary TV monitors and satellite dish to the school. The news items to be shown will be of the promoter’s selection, previewed by the school' only to make sure they are compatible with the Family Life Education curriculum. The ads will tout “such products as snack food, sport shoes, and clothes that appeal to teenagers.”
