About 84 percent of the revenue for the town comes from the meals and lodging tax. Mr. Fisher noted that the Inn at Little Washington collects about 85 percent of the tax. Another 10 percent comes from The Country Cafe, and bed and breakfast businesses bring in about 5 percent.
Reinhardt Lynch, co-proprietor of The Inn, asked the council to consider other taxes such as real estate, business or cigarette taxes.
Mr. Fisher said he estimated that a business .ax would bring in at most $2,000. Residents would expect more services for real estate taxes, and no business within the town limits currently sells cigarettes.
