“Fear is the great enemy,” Ms. Laurie said. “It’s much easier never to let fear into the riding ring in the first place than to chase it out once it’ssnuck in.”
While they hope to establish a local clientele for lessons and horse training, the two young women are also planning to offer special services for the tourist market. They’re aiming primarily at visitors to bedand-breakfast inns who want an upclose-and-personal look at the Blue Ridge foothills.
“The best way to see the country is from the back of a horse,” said Ms. Marsh. “We've got the horses, both for novices and experienced riders, and we’ve got the country. Some of the views between Five Forks and Red Oak Mountain have’t changed in a hundred years.”
And a unique addition to the ride lets Mountain Springs’ clients take the view home with them. When the partners escort a group on the trails, Ms. Marsh carries along her camera. Her photos are more than just snapshots—for eight years she worked as a professional photographer.
