The county Water and Sewer Authority could be subject to fines of up to $25,000 per day for violations of the Sperryville sewer plant permit, but members hope to avoid such fines.
According to a letter, Richard Burton, executive director of the State Water Control Board, sent to James E. Swindler II, secretary treasurer of the WSA last week, inspections of the plant in May and June “documented discharges of partially treated sewage from the plant, poor operation and maintenance practices, and improper sampling and reporting procedures.”
Reports filed at the northern regional office of the State Water Control Board indicate increasingly serious violations observed during inspections conducted April 15, April 30, June 3 and July 7.
