imately 3 1/2 months until election day and Clinton has a 23-point lead in the polls. But only the most wildly optimistic Democrat could believe that kind of lead will hold up. By the end of the Republican convention in August, President Bush will probably be within striking distance of Clinton. But then again your guess is as good as mine.
How well can a Clinton-Gore ticket do in Virginia? That is a key question since if Bush cannot take Virginia, it is hard to see how he can possibly be re-elected, bearing in mind Virginia has voted Republican in presidential elections since 1968.
On the face of it the Democratic ticket appears very attractive since both are from southern border states and call themselves moderates. If Perot had stayed in, then the ticket’s chances in Virginia would probably have been much better.
