possible because most of the population is now hatching from the egg stage and is therefore highly susceptible. However, there are enough mites in other less susceptible stages to make it necessary that two applications (10 days apart) be applied to give satisfactory control.
Generally, populations of the beneficial predatory black laybird beetle have been lower than normal but are expected to increase quickly in response to higher mite numbers. Predatory mites are quite numerous in some orchard blocks and should be considered when planning your control strategies.
Monitor the following insect pests carefully: red-banded leafroller, tufted apple budmoth, variegated leafroller, white apple leafhopper, tentiform leaf miner and codling moth.
Peach growers should know that the first Japanese bettles of this season have appeared in the Winchester area. Preparations should be made soon to control peach tree borer once the harvest is done.
As of July 7 accumulated degree-days (above 50 degrees F.) for 1992 at the Research Farm were 1030. By this time last year approximately 1,800 degree-days had accumulated.
Keith Yoder of the laboratory reminds growers to continue to monitor apple orchards for the summer diseases, Brooks spot, sooty blotch, fly speck, and the fruit rots. Orchard blocks may vary with regard to infection conditions (especially evening showers and possible hail injury), fungal inoculum sources, and amount of fungicide protection.
Some locations within an orchard may have a history for certain summer diseases. These areas should be monitored more closely and additional preventive measures taken, if needed.
