‘hippie* lifestyle, Rabbi Theodore emphatically denies that she was ever actually one herself. “It was a strange thing at the time,” said Rabbi Theodore, “to find people living values I had always believed in, but I wasn’t entirely happy about those people living those values.”

“The love of nature, the desire to live your own values, the desire to live honestly without the small sort of pretenses had always been important to me,” said Rabbi Theodore, who was born and raised in New Jersey.

Divorced from her husband, a painter and geologist, Rabbi Theodore raised her three daughters, for the most part, as a single mother. The girls were educated at the Nethers School and today have successful careers
