money. “We thought that the minute we got out of the gate in California, the money would start coming in,” he said. “But we were stuck in Colorado for a while until the organizers were able to send us some more money.”
The riders did have some corporate support, most especially from Miller Beer. “We had a great time when we got to Milwaukee. We had lunch in the executive dining room with the president and the vice-president of Miller,” he said. "They treated us like kings. They couldn’t believe how much we ate. Then we got the VIP tour, and were taken to the gift shop and told to help ourselves to anything we wanted. They gave us seven cases of beer to enjoy when the trip is over.”
Others across the country did what they could to help. In Colorado they stayed free at a lodge and went fishing and horseback riding. After staying at a Ramada Inn out west, the manager called ahead for them and arranged 11717302 for some free rooms at other Ramada Inns along their way.
From coast to coast, both veterans and civilians were impressed and appreciative of their efforts. But perhaps none were more appreciative than the Korean War veterans who gather annually in Washington, D.C., to remember their comrades.
