Patty Shaw’s first grade students, who have been studying mammals and birds in science class at Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly, got to meet the real thing at near-by Jordan River Farm recently.
“It was a fantastic learning experience,” said Mrs. Shaw. “Everything was hands-on.” They were joined by the school’s fourth graders, who are studying colonial times with their teacher, Kathy Atanasov.
The older students especially enjoyed guessing the usage of various antique kitchen utensils in the farmhouse, following lunch on the patio, which began their afternoon on the farm.
The students shook milk from the early morning milking in jars until the butter separated, watched the butter being rinsed, and then ate some of the butter on top of freshlybaked biscuits.
