Dickey and Mrs. Lelia Lucas were named as Rappahannock Soil Conservationists of the Year for their work at Wakefield Manor, their 1,000-acre farm near Huntly. At a banquet held last Thursday night at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, the Dickeys and Mrs. Lucas were honored, along with four other winners from the Soil and Water Conservation District, which includes Culpeper, Madison, Green and Orange counties as well as Rappahannock.
Rap Owings, Rappahannock Extension agent and secretary of the Rappahannock portion of the district, presented the award and gave some background on; the conservation techniques practiced by the award winners.
Sharon Genebach Luke was named to Rappahannock’s Board of Zoning Appeals on Friday by the Circuit Court. Judge Shore Robertson announced the appointment after hearing public comment last Wednesday on the vacancy created by the resignation of Josef Gardiner.
Christopher Parrish, nominated to the slot by the county Board of Supervisors, withdrew his name after Luke was proposed as the Jackson District representative. Citing his existing responsibilities as a member of the county’s electoral board, Parrish noted that he would have to resign from the body if, appointed to the BZA. Luke, 32, is a resident of Amissville and shares a joint law practice with her husband, Peter, in Washington.
Price increases will go into effect November 1 for about 100 of the wine and distilled spirits items sold in State ABC stores. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said the new prices will reflect increases charged by suppliers. Of the 848 items on the Department’s price list, 85 of the items will increase in price by 25 cents or less while 16 items will go up in price by more than 25 cents.
