The Commonwealth of Virginia has voted Republican for the past 20 years, and the northerly reaches of the Old Dominion, in particular, have been a bastion of GOP loyalty.
Area Democrats are looking for that to change with the party’s powerful ticket this year, and have been handing out reams of literature at shopping centers for the past several Saturdays, organized an auto caravan through the 10th District last week, organized phone banks throughout the area, lined up workers for county precincts on Nov. 3, and developed a “ride to the polls” program for Election Day in many localities.
Ray Vickery, the Democratic challenger in the 10th Congressional District, iB “shifting his ‘campaign for change’ into high gear for the final days before the election ... by taking his message to the people,” according to his Oakton campaign headquarters.
Vickery has belittled his opponent, incumbent Republican Frank Wolf, for concentrating his campaign so heavily in the Fairfax suburbs, and is planning to frequent this area to drive home the point between now and Nov. 3.
The Democrat will visit a yet-unannounced site in Fauquier on Friday, will address the “lunch bunch” at the Public House in Flint Hill on Oct. 28, and will attend a rally on the steps of the Leesburg courthouse on Saturday, according to his office. * Vickery is running on a platform that is pro-choice, and calls for deficit reduction, congressional reform, and term limits.
